Designskolen Kolding X Ecco —
Collaboration with: Cille Andersen (Tx), Guillaume Roy (Id), Freja Hørberg (Id), Laura Poulsen (Ac) and Kitt Reffstrup (Fa)
Designskolen Kolding has an annual collaboration with Ecco Shoes, where I was fortunate to take part. This is a cross-disciplinary collaboration with students across the design school with the aim to design a collection of 6 shoes for Ecco, whereof 4 are to be made and 2 visualised. During several workshops and lectures, we got an insight into the process and steps involved in shoe making and had a full day at the Ecco headquarters in Ecco’s workshop to make a shoe in their industrial facilities.
The brief started with the two friction words love and hate inspired by the recent Commes de Garcons exhibition, where we had to build our own understanding of how the friction between love and hate might manifest in a shoe collection. After several mindmaps, we arrived at the topic of unstable balance, inspired by the unexplored conditions on Mars and the mental unsettlement in relation to future Mars travels. We created a moodboard to work from and built our persona and concept from here. This was my first experience with concept-driven design and mood boards, as the way of working in Glasgow is very different. I am happy I have tried both and found concept-driven design to be a rewarding challenge.
The project also aimed to enhance collaboration and understanding across disciplines, and for us to develop sustainable strategies. In the end, we had a photoshoot with a photography hired by the school. We therefore got to experience set directing, staging and editing of the photo shoot. There will be a book published later in 2019 with the process and projects of all the groups.
